UK energy management standard on course for publication

The new European standard on energy management sets out the requirements for a system which will enable all organizations to continually improve their energy efficiency, potentially cutting costs, and to be independently certified to this effect.

BSI will launch the standard at its Energy Management conference in September. A pilot scheme with UK organizations, designed to test EN 16001 ahead of publication, is due to start in April and BSI is currently developing publications and web-based services supporting implementation of BS EN 16001 (the UK-adopted standard).

EN 16001 informs international standard
EN 16001 feeds into work on the international energy management standard, ISO 50001, which is currently in development by the International Organization for Standardization and due to be completed in approximately 2 years. A key priority for European delegates contributing to this work is to ensure the compatibility of ISO 50001 with EN 16001 so that the transition to the former will be straightforward and there will be no disincentive for early adopters of EN 16001.

75 international experts met in Rio de Janeiro last week to further the development of the international standard. Two UK delegates, Martin Fry, a representative of the Carbon Trust and chair of ESTA, and Vilnis Vesma of NIFES Consulting, chaired two of the international Working Groups* responsible for developing ISO 50001. Also from the UK, Kris Szajdzicki of ND Metering Solutions and Ian Richardson of BSI British Standards attended the meeting. Kris and Vilnis are ESTA Council Members.

ISO 50001 will be further developed at an experts’ meeting in London in November to agree a revised draft.
